HamburgerThe American sandwich which conquered the world.

Ingredients 4 servings

750 g. ground beef

¼ cup finely chopped onion

2 tablespoons brown sugar or ordinary sugar

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 egg

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Black pepper, sweet pepper, salt

To serve

4 hamburger rolls

4 tablespoons ketchup

4 tablespoons mustard

4 lettuce leaves

4 slices of tomatoes

Coleslaw salad

Fried potatoes

1. Rub with the fingers the finely chopped onion, 1 teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon sweet pepper, and some black pepper and place in a bowl.

2. Add to the bowl the meat, sugar, mayonnaise, egg, Worcestershire sauce and mix all ingredients.

3. Divide mixture with wet hands to 4 parts and pat each to make a patty a little larger than the bread roll (they may be refrigerated or frozen at this stage, separated with wax paper).

4. Cut each roll in the middle leaving it attached at one end and heat in a medium oven for 10 minutes.

5. Fry the meat patties in the vegetable oil on both sides till cooked.

6. Place a lettuce leaf on each bread roll and top with the meat patties, ketchup, and mustard.

N.B.:  A nice addition to the hamburger:  Slice one onion into thin rounds and fry in vegetable oil till caramelized and place on top of the meat patties.

Another nice additions, add one tablespoon water to the residue of frying the meat and stir to collect all the juices of the meat and bring to the boil.  Dip the bread, cut side down and press on top to absorb the juices.

For Coleslaw Salad:

Rub with the fingers 6 cups very finely sliced cabbage leaves with 4 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons salt and set aside for 10 minutes then squeeze very well to get rid of all the liquid that came out and place in a bowl.

Mix 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar with ½ cup mayonnaise and ¼ cup cream and add to the cabbage bowl with ¾ cup finely shredded carrot.

Mix all ingredients.
